"Strictly Medicinal Seeds started out Horizon Herbs in the year 1985, a family-run seed company in Williams, Southern Oregon, dedicated to growing and disseminating seeds of medicinal herbs and trees. In the early days, it was just Richo, his wife Mayche, and their three kids Nadja, Jebran, and Sena. They worked pretty hard in those early years, pulling stones out of the field, digging irrigation trenches, setting up a greenhouse, planting seeds. . .
In time, bolstered by the expanding gardens and greenhouses and injected with new varieties obtained through international trade and travel, the seed collection grew to over 2,000 species. One year Mayche asked Richo what he wanted for his birthday, and his answer was "A seed catalog." Just like everything else they'd done, the seed catalog was a family affair, with the kids drawing plants, Richo providing the text, and Mayche packaging seeds, popping popcorn, and playing classic cello in the shadows of the evening.
The whole idea was to provide people with practical assistance to achieve self-sufficiency in food and medicine. In the year 2000 they published their first book "Making Plant Medicine" which quickly became an herbal best-seller. As the business and the farm grew, the family enterprise was expanded to include local friends who helped grow and package seeds. Jebran had a knack for inventing and welding, so produced their first tincture press. It was a great day when they realized they could get locally-made organic alcohol for making their tinctures!
To this day Strictly Medicinal Seeds walks their talk. Seeds, plants, tinctures, and information on self-sufficiency. They learned a great deal about what the plants could do for people, but in the end, the best part was. . . learning what the people could do for the plants!"
